Desiccator for Humidity Control: Types of Desiccators and Their Applications
A laboratory desiccator is a round shaped closed vessel made of glass, polypropylene, polycarbonate, or acrylic and has multiple uses, such as:
-Storage of standards under dry environment
-Storage of materials for weighing to constant weight
-Prolonged storage of hygroscopic materials
-Determination of loss on drying of manufactured products such as pharmaceuticals
Some desiccators are provided with vacuum fittings for evacuation of inside air for long-term storage of moisture sensitive materials. Vacuum desiccators can dry samples in two ways - under vacuum or by using a desiccant. Drying under vacuum uses a vacuum pump to remove any air from the system. Inert gases, such a nitrogen gas, can be used to achieve ultra-dry environments. Desiccants can help induce or sustain dry environments depending on the moisture content of the air and sample.
Made from borosilicate glass which makes the desiccator more robust. Ideal for drying, preserving, or storing moisture-sensitive substances.
-Non-Vacuum Desiccators: These are operated and monitored manually, making them economical and quite useful. Non-vacuum desiccators can dry samples in two ways: using a desiccant or by purging. Purging a desiccator uses an inert gas like nitrogen or compressed dry air to reduce oxygen levels. This type of desiccator uses atmospheric pressure to dry chemicals.
- Vacuum Desiccators: Vacuum desiccators can dry samples either under vacuum or using a desiccant. In the vacuum drying process, a vacuum pump and a glass stopcock on the lid are used to remove air from the system. Inert gases like nitrogen can be used to achieve ultra-dry environments. Desiccants can help create or maintain dry environments depending on the moisture content of the air and the samples.
Polycarbonate and Polypropylene
These desiccators are shatterproof, giving them high impact resistance and allowing them to withstand high vacuum pressures.
